My 28th Year (And what I learned while I was 27)

Well, Happy Birthday to me.  Today is my 28th birthday. *insert slow clap*

I don’t ever feel bad about birthdays, maybe because I’m still “young” in the grand scheme of things. But entering what is undoubtedly my LATE 20’s doesn’t really make me upset. I don’t know, there is power in being young, but there is power in being older, too. Maybe that’s why it doesn’t bother me.

Either way, as I bid farewell to the mid-twenties of my life, I thought I’d share with you 8 things I learned during my 27th year.

1. Sometimes you need to take a leap of faith
I quit my career as a teacher in my 27th year. After almost of decade of schooling and teaching, I left the profession to pursue social media, internet marketing, an enter a field where having a blog and YouTube channel wouldn’t be scandalous. I pretty much had no experience but went for it anyways accepting a job for a small company. When leaps of faith are right, you always know. There is always some sign to let you know “you chose correctly.” After 4 weeks at my new job they offered me a promotion to manager, and I knew that my leap paid off.

2. Wedding planning isn’t anything like you think it’ll be
I got engaged just before my 27th birthday, so the 27th year has been heavy on the wedding planning: I learned that wedding planning is about 80% pinteresting things you’ll never do/use/buy. You actually get TIRED of talking about your wedding. You can try on A LOT of dresses, and never find the one (even though everyone tells you you’ll just “know” when you put “the one” on.) There are also a lot of spreadsheets and due dates.

3. Sometimes the best adventures aren’t really “adventures” at all
My family used to spend a week on an island off the coast of Maine every summer together. This past summer Michael got us all together again to do it. I was super excited, but going to spend a week on a small, restrictive island I’d already been to (multiple times) isn’t exactly on my travel bucket list. But spending a week on that island with my family turned out to be the adventure I didn’t know there was. We spent time doing nothing. We cooked elaborate meals just because. One night we went to the only bar, made friends with locals, and spent all night laughing and playing pool with them. In the end, it was an adventure, and I loved it.

4. Jalapeno Margaritas are a thing, and they’re amazing.
YAASSSSSS. I even shared my own take on it once I discovered their deliciousness: Grilled Pineapple Jalapeño Margarita.

5. Work hard for the things you want
I think we can fall prey to the idea that if things are meant to be, they’ll find a way… and this relates to somethings in life, for sure. But I also believe, firmly, that if you really want something you have to work for it. Great things don’t always just happen, if you want something marvelous, you have to create something marvelous.

6. Learn to say “no,” politely.
Listen, I’m all about saying “yes” to new things and adventures…but there is also power in saying “no” when you don’t have the time, the energy, the money. We’ve become a culture with a strong fear of missing out all the time (and who can blame us when we can see how much fun everyone is having on pretty much every app ever), but making sure you don’t overdo it is important.

7. Treat yo’self.
I’ve always been a saver – saving money any way I can. And, I definitely still am, girlfriend LOVES a good sale. But I’m learning the importance of splurging on nicer things when they are worth it and getting myself things just to treat myself – including my bi-weekly bouquet of flowers for the house.

8. Vodka has a surprising amount of uses
When creating my 19 Fashion Hacks Every Woman Should know video I learned that you can use vodka for a surprising amount of things beyond just making a gimlet.

That does it for 8 things I learned in my 27th year! I hope you all have a lovely weekend and will see you all Monday morning, bright-eyed and bushy tailed. OH, and in case you were wondering from my last post, I am recovering, slowly, but almost fully healed. Thanks for all your sweet comments and I’m sorry I didn’t comment back (looking as screens was a battle!)
