I bought a mattress online…this is what happened.

Putting together our new home is a slow process for me. This is half due to being indecisive and half being that I don’t have an excessive monthly budget for home furnishings. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked around my house holding the same exact frame only to put it down and never actually hang it up.  -eye roll emoji-

When I DO finally make decisions, I am usually set on that decision and lack the willpower, patience, or frame of mind to wait 2-4 weeks while I “shop around” at brick and mortar stores for the piece I now have in my mind. I’m also a bargain hunter.  So, I head to the internet to scour feverishly, finding the best piece at the best price. This leads me to a lot of home furnishing purchases online.

So, when it came time to purchase new mattresses for our guest room/office, naturally I took to the internet. I didn’t really think about how one might buy a mattress online – surely it doesn’t fit into a box…right? But, I knew that putting my foot inside a mattress store was out of the question. I thought cars salesmen were bad but mattress salesmen are worse. When Michael and I were shopping for our bedroom mattress, the salesperson was so insistent, pushy, and, at the end of the day, not helpful at all. You would have had to offer me money to go back into one of those stores.

And that’s how I came across Tuft and Needle.

Tuft and Needle is an online mattress store – well they do have two brick and mortar locations, but mainly they are online. They were built on two main ideas 1. Mattress shopping shouldn’t suck. 2. Mattresses shouldn’t be overpriced. They set out on a journey to create a mattress that wasn’t over-priced or over-complicated. That’s my kinda jam.

So, how do you get a mattress online? They suck out all the air, roll it up real tight, and pop in into a box. Was I a little hesitant about ordering a mattress online that came in a box? Sure. But the reviews on these mattresses are out of this world, they had an average rating of over 4 stars. I mean thousands of people can’t be wrong, right? Plus, they offered free shipping and a 100-night free trial. And if I did return it I had the peace of mind knowing all returns are donated to local charities and non-profits across the country. What did I have to lose?

Oh, I think I forgot to mention the best part…the mattresses start at $350! A Queen is only $600! At the mattress store the only thing I could get for $600 was one of the “old mattresses” they had in the back corner laying up against the wall in a row. No lies.

The mattress comes burrito-ed up inside the box and shrink-wrapped.

The directions are simple.

1. Put the mattress burrito on your bed.

2. Wonder for a while if you ordered the wrong size because it really looks too small.

3. Convince husband you did NOT order the wrong size, even though you’re still not totally sure.

4. Cut the top layer of plastic.

6. Unwrap the mattress burrito.

7. Stress about it being the wrong size again. Don’t let your husband see the worry in your eyes.

8. Cut the final layer of shrink wrap plastic.

9. Freak out! THE MAGIC IS HAPPENING. It starts instantly growing in size. It’s probably the most exciting thing that could ever happen as far as mattress shopping goes. Within about 30 seconds the mattress expands to full size!

10. Quickly rub it in your husband’s face that you “TOLD HIM SO” – silently give a sigh of relief.

Even though this mattress is for our guest bedroom redo, the new bed frame isn’t here yet so we decided to try it out on our bed. I mean, we had the free 100-day trial, and we wanted to make sure it was as good as the all those reviews said. In case you were still wondering how this mattress fit in a box, well the Tuft and Needle mattresses are made with a foam they designed. It’s not memory foam – which sleeps hot, or the egg crate foam many mattresses pop on top of theirs.

The bed is a firmer sleep (like on a scale of 1-10 it’s maybe a 6) which makes you feel well supported, but still has good bounce. I think the most magical thing about this mattress is that it sleeps cool. I’m seriously the hottest sleeper ever. And I don’t mean that in the “I look so hot when I sleep” way, but if people want to read it that way who am I to stop them. No, I turn into an oven when I sleep. I actually can’t remember the last bed I slept on that I didn’t wake up hot. Well, this mattress did it. It keeps me so cool while I sleep which is 100% magic.

I want to thank Tuft and Needle for generously sending me this mattress to try out and review for you. All thoughts, words, and opinions are all my own – even the thing about looking hot when I sleep.
