How I Increased my Traffic by Blogging Half the Time

About 6 months ago I finally had the realization that I didn’t need to post 4x a week on my blog in order to be successful. Don’t ask me why it took almost 4 years of blogging to realize this, but it did. Some lessons take longer to learn.

For many years of my blogging career, I spent week after week, month after month, constantly clamoring to stay ahead of the game and get out at least 3-4 posts every week. I feared if I didn’t post enough my website traffic would plummet and I’d become irrelevant in the space. But, the more I looked around the more I realized that some of the most successful people I knew in the blogging space weren’t posting every day. Some weren’t even posting every week. Instead, they were taking a concerted effort to write really awesome posts that DID something for them. They took the time to market their posts. And, the rest of their extra time to do all the other things that need to be done to support a blog and growing entrepreneurial business.

How I increased my traffic by blogging half the time

And so, I thought I’d try it and start posting more quality less of the time. Always being a quality over quantity person it made sense to me. Plus, I knew I couldn’t continue on the rat race I was in, grasping at straws to make enough content every week. About 6 months ago I cut down the number of posts I was posting to 2-3 a week.  Now I am down to 1-2 a week.

Here’s what happened:

Here's what happening when I started posting fewer blog posts with MORE quality. Click To Tweet

I could write about things I care about

If you’re a blogger, then you’ve struggled with content creation at some point. You find yourself trying to come up with good blog posts ideas and occasionally staring at the laptop screen with a blank stare. When you are left to create content 3+ times a week, sometimes you run out of ideas. This can lead to grasping at straws for ideas.

Eventually, you get tired of the same old posts. I didn’t want to read another “5 items I love for fall” post myself, so why was I thinking about writing it? Because it was a filler. It’s a post I write to fill in space and meet my 3-post a week goal.

But, by giving myself the freedom of not having to create SO much content, I can write fewer posts about things I care about more. This gave me the freedom to not HAVE to post and the enjoyment to only take time on posts I cared about.

More time to craft valuable, detailed posts

Having fewer posts to write means the posts I do write can be more meaningful, detailed, and well constructed. I have more time to research, write, and edit to order to create more high-quality posts. It gives me the time to write, rewrite, edit, and rework my ideas. It also gives me the time to add in extras to my posts, like last week’s money tracker I created alongside my post about making a monthly budget. Not only is this more valuable to the reader, but lead magnets like this one help me grow my list – so it’s valuable for me too!

More time to market each post

When I used to try to get out more content I was barely getting the content out in time, let alone making time to market each post. I think a mistake a lot of bloggers make is they spend a TON of time crafting a post to just let it go to pasture to die. We maybe share it a little when it first goes live, schedule a few tweets, and be done with it. The truth is, you spent a lot of time writing that post! You should take the time to properly market it now and in the future (assuming it’s evergreen.)

Grew my traffic by over 30%

One of my biggest fears in cutting back on posts was that I was going to see a big decrease in traffic. Less content to consume meant less traffic to the site, right? Wrong.

Every time I logged into my GA I noticed a small increase – just take a look at that screenshot for proof. Overall I’ve grown my traffic well over 35% in less than 3 months. It was real proof that quality mattered a lot more than quantity for my blog.

By taking the time to write VALUABLE posts that were detailed and well-written, and taking the time to MARKET each post, I was getting more traction on my blog than I had in years.

More time for other endeavors

Having a break from that rat race of constantly trying to get out a post every other day means I have more time for other entrepreneurial endeavors.

As a lot of you know I also run Caffeinate and Conquer, where I now will have more time to dedicate to getting out blog posts and can finally finish the mini-course I’m working on!

I also launched Social Media Management Services for small Connecticut businesses and have already landed two clients! If you’re reading this from Connecticut, check out our new Instagram handle I just launched, @GetSeenCT and share your Connecticut adventures using #GetSeenCT

More time for learning

One of the best things about having a little more time in my days means I’ve made time to keep learning!

I love blogging and feel so fortunate to do what I do. But that doesn’t make blogging easy — in fact, sometimes it’s downright hard. That’s why taking the time to learn and invest in myself has always been SO SO important to me.

If you’re a fellow blogging, you’re probably like me and at times maybe you’ve felt frustrated, confused, or stuck… trying to figure out how to grow your blog, get more traffic, overcome hurdles, find smart strategies, and earn more money.  Truthfully, one of the best ways I know to improve in blogging is to learn from other brilliant bloggers. And, luckily I’ve had the chance to jump on some Skype calls or meet in-person with some other awesome bloggers to learn from them and improve my craft. Unfortunately, it isn’t always that easy.

Don’t you wish there was a way to learn from some of the smartest bloggers on the web on ALL the topics that matter for every level of blogger, without ever leaving your house?
