Simple Everyday Contour

simple-contour-how-to

Hey friends! I’m back! Holy guacamole I feel like I was gone forever, but it was only a week and it was such a nice, relaxing break.

But I’m back with a simple everyday contour routine.  I’ve recently perfected my daytime, wearable contour and figured it was time to share.  A lot of contour routines are too harsh for everyday wear (for my usual makeup style at least), so this is a more muted, everyday contour routine that I can wear without feeling like I have too much on my face.

Let’s do this!

Everyday-Contour1. Starting with a clean and moisturized face, cover your dark circles with a concealer that is darker than your natural skin tone.  I know this sounds counterproductive, but it’s a tip I learned recently and it really works wonders.  The darker concealer is ACTUALLY able to COVER the dark circles, better diminishing their appearance.  We’ll come back and brighter later.  I’m wearing Benefit’s Boi-ing Concealer in “02”

2. Apply your foundation. I’m constantly back and forth between a beauty blender and flat topped kabuki brush, so use whatever you’re most comfortable with.  I’m wearing Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Foundation.

PIT STOP: Stop here and apply any eye makeup.

3. Time to contour! I use a cream contour in the form of a foundation stick in a shade a few shades too dark for me.  I prefer this method because I find it gives the most natural look.

WHERE exactly you contour is dependent on your face shape.  Where you contour gives your face dimension, it makes those areas appear to be sinking inward.  For this reason, most people tend to contour the hollows of their cheeks, along their hairline, jawline, sides of the nose, and chin.  You can find the hollows of your cheeks simply by feeling for where your cheekbone ends, contour in these hollows from your ear until about the mid-point of your face.  Next we contour the forehead. If you have a larger forehead, you’ll want to contour along the entire hairline, as this will shrink the appearance of your forehead.  If you don’t want your forehead to appear smaller, you can simple contour the corners as you can see I did.  Next is down the sides of the nose to define your nose shape.  Lastly is the chin and jawline.  Adding darkness along your jawline defines that angle and you can define the chin to make it appear more rounded (which I do since I have a very angular faced shape.)  I’m wearing Maybelline Fit Me Foundation Stick.

4. Time to highlight. I told you we’d brighten up, didn’t I? Using a brightening or lighter concealer, lighten the areas you want to appear to be coming forward. In general, under the eyes in an upside-down triangle shape, down the bridge of the nose, center of the chin and forehead, all tend to be flattering places to highlight. I’m wearing Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in “light.”

5. Set everything into place. When using all cream products you’ll want to set it all into place with a translucent powder to prevent it from all just sliding off during the day.  I’m wearing Tarte Smooth Operator Finishing Powder. (Oh, and go ahead and add any blush at this point, focusing on the apples of your cheeks and sweeping backwards.)

6. You’re done, you go girlfriend!

I know contouring can be very intimidating at first, but start with small, subtle contour and practice with what looks best on your face.  What’s most important is to use your own face shape to guide the contour and highlight placement.
