The Hot and Dirty Martini

Hot and Dirty Martini Recipe

Listen, girlfriend loves herself a good martini. And, over the years of drinking a certain drink, you start to develop a preference. Certain vodka, special preparations, and what have you.

For the past few years I’ve been sweet on Dirty Martinis. I personally like the taste of vodka (GOOD vodka, let’s be clear), and so I enjoy drinks that allow me to taste it instead of always hiding the flavor behind mixers and garnish. In my quest for the perfect dirty martini I learned a few things I liked. Stirred, not shaken (more about that later). Vodka over Gin – this one could be widely debated as many mixologist enthusiasts state Gin is the only way to a proper Dirty Martini. In my opinion, I’ve learned I prefer vodka as it actually has a milder flavor than gin and doesn’t overpower the flavor of olive juice, while gin often has aromatics which can sometimes be too strong. But, the best rendition I’ve had of a Dirty Martini is the Hot and Dirty. I’ve spent the last 6 months perfecting it and today I’m going to give you the inside scoop.

The Hot and Dirty

This is a spin on the classic Dirty Martini, but with a kick. Add a little pickled jalapeno juice in with the olive juice and garnish with blue cheese stuffed olives. Let’s discuss further.

Ingredients
2.5 oz Vodka
.5 oz Dry vermouth
.5 oz Olive brine & pickled jalapeno juice
3 blue cheese stuffed olives (hand stuffed)

Pour all the wet ingredients into a cocktail shaker over ice and stir. Why do I prefer this cocktail stirred? There is a time to shake and a time to stir a drink. One general rule is usually agreed upon: Cocktails that have juice, dairy, or egg whites should be shaken. The reason is that the shaking of these things over ice aerates them creating a nice frothy effect. Cocktails that don’t have these things don’t benefit from being shaken. Additionally, it has been scientifically proven that shaking cocktails actually decreases their ABV, which ultimately effecting the taste. You can read all that science here. Now, everyone has their own preferences on these things, but I’ll stick to stirred.

Pour the contents into a glass. I like my martini on the rocks – another preference. Stirring cocktails doesn’t lower their temperature as much, so I think that’s why I enjoy them on the rocks as it keeps the beverage cooler. Garnish with two blue cheese stuffed olives. It’s important you hand-stuff the olives instead of getting the pre-stuffed ones, those pre-stuffed ones are never as good.
