Two-Ingredient D.I.Y. Face Masks for Every Skin Type

D.I.Y face masks and hair masks are my favorite. I love how simple and affordable they are to whip up at home. But, the best thing about them is they are effective! I’ve used my fair share of D.I.Y masks as well as the really expensive store-bought ones and often find these D.I.Y ones to be just as effective (if not more in many cases!) I love learning the science behind the different ingredients and how each ingredient has different benefits for your skin.

Today I wanted to share some of my favorite 2-ingredient face masks to make at-home facials even easier. Each of these masks only needs two things you likely already have in your pantry or fridge. I’m sharing 5 different D.I.Y face masks, each with different benefits for different skin types. There is a mask out there for everyone! Two-Ingredient D.I.Y. Face Masks for Every Skin Type

1. Exfoliate and Firm

Coffee Grounds and Coconut Oil

Caffeic acid is found in coffee which has anti-inflammatory properties and helps increase collagen production, leaving your skin smooth and taut. Many beauty companies have begun using coffee and/or caffeine in their beauty products for its tightening effects. Additionally, the coffee grounds act as the perfect maco-exfoliant. Coconut oil’s molecular structure allows for quick absorption of moisture, so this face scrub is safe to use on oily- or acne-prone skin because the oil doesn’t linger.

To create this face mask warm your coconut oil to its liquid state. Combine it with about equal parts used coffee grounds (I usually do 2 tablespoons of each) Use exfoliant on your skin by gently rubbing it in small circular motions. Leave the scrub on your face for 5-10 minutes before rinsing off.

2. Moisturize

Yogurt and Raw Honey

Yogurt contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid which works as a mild exfoliant. This promotes new cell turnover and new skin cells are better are absorbing moisture. Raw honey has B3 and B6 which help to moisturize. It’s also a humectant. Humectant substances are able to retain moisture which means it draws in and locks in moisture to your skin.

To create this face mask combine 1 tablespoons of plain yogurt and 1 tablespoon of honey. (Raw honey is thicker than refined honey so I usually warm it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to make it easier to mix) Combine well and apply to face. Leave on your skin for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water.

3. Acne Control

Lemon and Cinnamon

The acid in lemon juice acts as a mild astringent reducing excess oil and redness. Additionally, the citric acid has antiseptic properties which makes it good at reducing bacteria. Cinnamon’s anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties make it a great addition to this mask.

Take the juice of 1/2 of a large lemon and combine it with 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Gently apply to the areas affected by the blemish(this one applies nicely with a saturated cotton ball). Leave on for 5 minutes then rinse away. Use daily.

4. Brightening

Yogurt and Tomato

As discussed previously, yogurt contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid which works as a mild exfoliant. This promotes new cell turnover. Tomatoes have vitamin C that helps increase and maintain proper collagen production as well as Magnesium that helps skin maintain youthfulness.

Combine 1/4 of a tomato with 2 tablespoons yogurt and blend in a blender/food processor. Apply to your skin and leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing away.

Oil Reduction

Apple cider vinegar and unsweetened applesauce

Apple cider vinegar is detoxifying and has astringent properties. It also kills bacteria and balances the pH level of your skin. Apples are naturally detoxifying. They also contain a natural malic acid which is a powerful exfoliant.

Combine 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 1 tablespoon of unsweetened applesauce.  Apply to your skin. This mask is quite liquidy so if you have an extra unused foundation brush it works great for applying this masks to the skin. Leave on for 5-10 minutes and then rinse away.

Important Notes about DIY Beauty:

DIY and All-Natural beauty is beneficial for a multitude of reasons. Not only is it more affordable but it’s free of parabens and other toxins. Additionally, it’s cruelty-free.  That being said, that doesn’t always mean using it keeps you safe from reactions. Just like anything else, your skin can have natural reactions to all kinds of substances. I always suggest you test all ingredients on a small patch of skin before trying it all over your face.  Typically your inner wrist is a great place to test a small patch as that skin is very similar to the skin on your face. Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse away to ensure you don’t have any reactions to any ingredients.
